About Payroll & Tax Calculators

Paycheck calculators can help employees and employers estimate take-home pay after federal, state, and selected local deductions. Our directory currently covers 48 US states plus Washington, DC; Alabama and Louisiana are not yet available. Each page identifies the tax-year assumptions used so you can assess whether it fits your situation.

Beyond paycheck estimation, this category includes tools for self-employment tax, overtime pay, and prorated rent. Tax rules and individual circumstances vary, so treat results as planning estimates and verify current IRS, state, and payroll guidance before relying on them.

What You Can Calculate

  • Calculate net pay after federal, state, and FICA deductions
  • Compare take-home pay across different US states before relocating
  • Estimate quarterly self-employment tax for freelancers and contractors
  • Calculate overtime and time-and-a-half pay for hourly workers
  • Plan W-4 withholding adjustments after a raise or new job
  • Compare a paycheck estimate with your pay stub

Frequently Asked Questions

Common deductions include federal income-tax withholding, state or local withholding where applicable, Social Security, Medicare, and employee benefit contributions. A benefit can reduce federal income-tax wages, FICA wages, state wages, all three, or none; the treatment depends on the plan and jurisdiction.

For 2025, employees generally pay Social Security tax at 6.2% on covered wages up to $176,100 and Medicare tax at 1.45% on covered wages without that cap. Employers begin withholding an additional 0.9% Medicare tax after paying an employee more than $200,000 in calendar-year Medicare wages; final liability thresholds depend on filing status.

These tools estimate annual tax liability and divide it by the selected pay frequency; they do not reproduce an employer's W-4 payroll engine. Benefits, local taxes, payroll timing, credits, extra withholding, garnishments, and supplemental-wage methods can all change a pay stub.

Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator and submit a new Form W-4 when appropriate. Eligible traditional retirement or benefit elections may change taxable wages, but reducing withholding alone does not reduce final tax liability and underpayment can trigger a penalty.

No. For 2025, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not impose a broad individual state income tax on wages. Other state or local payroll taxes can still apply.
