About Construction & Materials Calculators

Material calculators for construction save time and money by giving accurate quantity estimates before you visit the supplier. Overordering wastes your budget; underordering causes costly project delays. Our tools are built around industry-standard formulas and include a recommended waste factor so your estimate accounts for cuts, off-cuts, and irregular layouts.

From calculating how many sheets of drywall a room needs to figuring out how many tons of asphalt will pave a parking lot, each tool walks you through the inputs step by step. Results are shown in the units contractors and suppliers actually use: tons, sheets, board feet, and square feet, so you can go straight from calculator to purchase order.

What You Can Calculate

  • Estimate drywall sheets and fasteners needed for a room
  • Calculate asphalt or bitumen tonnage for driveways, roads, and parking lots
  • Find the number of board feet for a lumber order
  • Determine square footage for flooring, tiling, or painting
  • Calculate conduit fill for NEC 2023-compliant electrical work
  • Compute roof pitch angle, multiplier, and total surface area

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard waste factors vary by material: 10% for drywall in rectangular rooms (15% for rooms with many cuts), 10-15% for tile depending on the pattern, 5-10% for lumber, and 5% for asphalt on straightforward paving jobs. Our calculators include a waste factor input so you can adjust based on the complexity of your specific project.

Bitumen is the petroleum binder, the dark sticky material that holds aggregates together. Asphalt (also called tarmac or blacktop) is the finished paving mixture of bitumen and crushed stone or gravel. When calculating tonnage for a paving project, you use the asphalt calculator. The bitumen calculator is more relevant for road construction and seal coat applications.

Break the room into rectangles. Calculate the area of each rectangle separately (length × width), then add them together. Our square footage calculator supports L-shaped rooms and up to five separate zones, so you can enter each section individually and get a combined total with an optional waste percentage.

The National Electrical Code limits how many conductors can be pulled through a conduit to prevent excessive heat buildup. The fill percentage is based on conductor cross-section area versus conduit interior area. For a single conductor, the maximum fill is 53%. For two conductors it drops to 31%, and three or more conductors allow 40%. Our conduit fill calculator uses 2023 NEC tables to check compliance instantly.
