Example 1: Standard in-ground rectangular pool

A typical backyard pool measures 16 ft x 32 ft with a shallow end of 3.5 ft and deep end of 8 ft.

Avg depth = (3.5 + 8) / 2 = 5.75 ft
Cu ft = 16 x 32 x 5.75 = 2,944 cu ft
Gallons = 2,944 x 7.48 = 22,022 gallons
Shock at 1 lb/10,000 gal: 2.2 lbs per treatment

Example 2: 18-foot round above-ground pool

A common 18 ft diameter above-ground pool with a uniform depth of 4 ft.

Radius = 18 / 2 = 9 ft
Cu ft = Pi x 9^2 x 4 = 1,017.9 cu ft
Gallons = 1,017.9 x 7.48 = 7,614 gallons

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using a single depth instead of the average depth
Pools with a slope from shallow to deep end cannot use either the shallow or deep depth alone. The correct approach is (shallow depth + deep depth) / 2. Using just the deep end depth will overestimate volume by 20-40%.

Selecting the wrong shape for your pool
A kidney-shaped pool is best approximated as an oval, not a rectangle. An oval above-ground pool should use the oval formula, not round. The right shape formula can make a 10-20% difference in the calculated volume.
