Dog Weight Calculator by Breed: How AKC Standards Work

Breed weight standards are set by kennel clubs based on the historical function of the breed and what weight range produces healthy conformation without straining joints or the cardiovascular system. The American Kennel Club (AKC) publishes breed standards for all 200+ recognized breeds. This calculator covers 45 of the most common breeds across five size categories.

Breed (example)CategoryAKC Weight Range
ChihuahuaToy2-6 lbs
French BulldogSmall20-28 lbs
Australian ShepherdMedium40-65 lbs
Labrador RetrieverLarge55-80 lbs
Great DaneGiant110-175 lbs
Bernese Mountain DogLarge70-115 lbs

Male dogs consistently run 10 to 20 percent heavier than females within the same breed. A female Labrador near the top of the 80 lb range may be overweight, while a male at the same weight could be healthy. This calculator uses a single range per breed; sex-specific adjustment requires manual interpretation. If your dog is still growing, see the Puppy Weight Calculator to predict adult size from current measurements.

Adult Dog Weight Calculator: Is Your Dog at a Healthy Weight?

Scale weight alone does not tell you whether a dog is healthy. Veterinarians use a 9-point body condition score (BCS) that combines visual and tactile assessment. A dog can be at the top of its breed weight range and be lean and muscular, or at the middle of its range and carry excess fat. BCS 4 to 5 is the target for most adult dogs.

BCSConditionRib / Waist Check
1-3UnderweightRibs visible; prominent hip bones; little muscle mass
4-5IdealRibs easily felt; visible waist from above; tuck behind ribs
6-7OverweightRibs felt with moderate pressure; waist barely visible
8-9ObeseRibs not palpable; no waist; significant fat deposits

Female dogs have unique weight considerations during pregnancy and nursing, when a moderate weight gain is expected and healthy. Body condition monitoring becomes especially important in the final trimester. The Dog Pregnancy Calculator tracks gestation timeline and whelping date if you are monitoring a pregnant female.

Dog Weight Loss Calculator: Safe Rate and Timeline

Safe weight loss for dogs is 1 to 2 percent of current body weight per week. Faster loss causes muscle wasting and nutritional deficiencies. The formula for the weekly target loss range:

Weekly loss = current weight x 0.01 (min) to current weight x 0.02 (max)
Current weightTarget loss per weekWeeks to lose 10%
20 lbs0.2-0.4 lbs5-10 weeks
40 lbs0.4-0.8 lbs5-10 weeks
60 lbs0.6-1.2 lbs5-10 weeks
80 lbs0.8-1.6 lbs5-10 weeks
100 lbs1.0-2.0 lbs5-10 weeks

The standard approach is to reduce daily food intake by 20 to 25 percent below maintenance and increase low-impact activity (leash walks, swimming). Use the dog's ideal body weight, not current weight, when calculating raw or fresh food portions for a dog on a weight-loss plan. The Raw Dog Food Calculator calculates daily raw food amounts based on target weight.

Example Calculation

A male Labrador Retriever currently weighs 90 lbs. AKC standard range for the breed is 55 to 80 lbs.

Breed max: 80 lbs
Overweight threshold: 80 x 1.10= 88 lbs
Current weight:90 lbs
90 > 88Overweight
Status: Overweight by 10 lbs (12.5% above max)
Safe loss: 90 x 0.01-0.020.9-1.8 lbs/week
Time to 80 lbs at safe rate6-11 weeks

This dog needs to lose 10 lbs to reach the top of its breed standard. At a safe rate of 1 to 2 percent per week, that takes 6 to 11 weeks with a 20 to 25 percent calorie reduction and increased exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideal weight depends on breed, sex, and bone structure rather than a single number. This calculator shows the AKC breed standard range. Male dogs typically weigh 10 to 20 percent more than females within the same breed. A dog at the low end of its range is not necessarily underweight if its ribs are easily felt but not visible and it has a visible waist when viewed from above.

Pro Tip
The rib check is the most reliable home weight assessment. Place your hands on your dog's sides with thumbs on the spine. You should be able to feel each rib with light pressure but not see them. If you have to push hard, your dog is likely carrying excess weight.
