How the Pizza Calculator Works

The calculator takes three inputs - group size, appetite level, and pizza size - and returns the exact number of pizzas to order. It always rounds up (ceiling) so you never run short.

The Formula

Total Slices = People x Slices Per Person
Pizzas Needed = ceiling(Total Slices / Slices Per Pizza)
Leftover Slices = (Pizzas Ordered x Slices Per Pizza) - Total Slices

Slices Per Person Guide

  • Light (2 slices): Side dish, light eaters, or kids alongside other food
  • Normal (3 slices): Standard adult portion for pizza as the main meal
  • Hungry (4 slices): Teens, athletes, or very hungry adults
  • Children: Count as 1-2 slices regardless of appetite setting

Example Calculation

You are hosting a birthday party for 16 people, with mostly adults who are normal eaters. You plan to order large pizzas (10 slices each).

People16
AppetiteNormal (3 slices)
Pizza sizeLarge (10 slices)
Total slices (16 x 3)48 slices
Pizzas needed (ceiling of 48 / 10)5 pizzas
Total slices ordered (5 x 10)50 slices
Leftover slices2 slices

Ordering 5 large pizzas gives everyone 3 slices with 2 slices to spare. If any of those 16 people are children or light eaters, 5 large pizzas will likely have more leftover. At 4 slices per person (hungry setting), you would need 7 large pizzas for the same group.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on size and how the pizzeria cuts it. A standard small (10 inch) pizza is typically cut into 6 slices. A medium (12 inch) gets 8 slices. A large (14 inch) gets 10 slices. An extra-large (16 inch) or party-size pizza usually comes in 12 slices. Some places cut large pizzas into 8 instead of 10 - always confirm with your order if it matters.

Pro Tip
Ordering mixed sizes is often cheaper than ordering all larges. A medium and a large together may give more slices at a lower price than two larges, depending on the pizzeria. Compare total slice count and price per slice before finalizing your order.
